Spoon is a definitive view of new product design, presenting the work of 100 exceptional designers who have emerged on an international platform as recently as the last five years: these are selected by 10 critics, designers and entrepreneurs who are universally respected for their informed opinion on the international contemporary design scene.

This book provides provides a unique opportunity to explore a diverse collection of recent design projects: furniture, lighting, tools, utensils, high-tech products, machinery and so on. The designers are listed in alphabetical order, featuring two double-page spreads for each. Fresh, exemplary products are brought to life by sketches, drawings, computer renderings, model and prototypes that help to explain, together with the extensive captions, the process behind each project.

Short analytical texts by the curators explains the designers' works and the characteristics that make their projects forward-looking and groundbreaking. Spoon also features, at the end of the book, 10 'classic' industrially manufactured product designs, chosen by the curators as best examples of the 'good design'. These 'classics' are accompanied by the curators' respective explanations of their choice of designers and their concept of 'good design'.

Spoon takes its place in a unique series of surveys identifying 100 of the most interesting, cutting-edge practitioners of key art forms. Parallel surveys include cream and Fresh Cream (contemporary art), BLINK. (photography), and 10 x 10 and 10 x 10_2 (architecture).

Also available is a specially-bound hardback edition, with a striking steel cover, which mirrors the pioneering design of the book's subject matter, asserting, through its unique design, a vital presence.
Rezensionen
'Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. 10 curators are asked to select 100 artists and 10 classics of their chosen medium. Phaidon has done this before with stunning effect...' (Sunday Business Post, Ireland) 'A designed object in its own right...The hundreds of product shots have been reproduced beautifully. Their ratio to text is balanced and generally won't leave you itching for more information on any of the seriously intriguing concepts you might come across - something that's often a hazard with showcase directories...The 10 x 10 format offers the scope to really comb through design world. As pages alternate between the witty (Thomas Bernstrand), the whimsical (Matali Crasset), and the classics (Marc Newson), the common thread is that all are inspired and all in turn are inspirational. If you care about what's great in contemporary product design and you want a reason to buy Spoon, you've got exactly 100.' (Henrietta Thompson, Blueprint) 'Where once 'product design' incorporated little more than furniture and lighting, we now live in a designed world - a point clearly reflected in the diverse range of products included in Spoon. Incorporating every aspect of industrial design, what might at first look like just another design directory is actually a cleverly disguised snapshot of an industry that has seen dramatic change in recent years.' (Lakshmi Bhaskaran, Graphics International) '400 beautiful, jaw-dropping and sometimes hilarious pages convince the reader of the staggering diversity in designers' styles and the media they employ...Objects can be more than they appear to be, and this book is certainly much more than a coffee-table flick-through. Cool in the extreme.' (Theme) 'If you're fond of design, you can't miss this. Superb.' (Boys Toys)

'Definitely on our Christmas list.' (Time Out) 'This is product design on the broadest level: toasters, sofas, motorbikes and trainers are among the practically, aesthetically and conceptually brilliant products wrestling for space in the busy pages...Texts include introductions to each designer and helpful product explanations, and there's a fascinating section where the curators choose a seminal object - including the Citröen DS and the Vespa.' (Time Out Dubai) 'A true delight.' (Blok)

'Chock-full of inspirational product-based design.' (Grafik) 'Definitely the book to have for anyone practicing, curious about, interested in or just plain infatuated with industrial design, Spoon uses more than 450 pages to showcase 100 of the latest and most compelling design works by 10 designers during the last 5 years.' (i-D) 'Do judge the new design book Spoon by its cover...Spoon is a global survey of budding genius in the field of product design. Designers spend their lives trying to turn humdrum objects into something more delightful, while making sure they fulfill their function. In that spirit, the book's publisher, Phaidon, transformed a bound volume into something wittier: an object of desire...It is any young designer's dream to be discovered by the likes of Spoon's team.' (Washington Post)

'[Has] its pulse on what's hot.' (Dwell) 'These exquisite pages are packed with all sorts of innovations in 21st-century industrial and furniture design...A work of art in itself.' (Yoursource)

'This eye-catching book presents an international exhibition of outstanding work by 100 product designers. The majority can be said to have some identifiable, even everyday, purpose to them, but there are also a few instances of the fantastic and downright absurd.' (Azure) 'A must for anyone interested in contemporary design...It's destined to become a collector's item for those in the know.' (HFN) 'Leave it to Phaidon Press to create an international overview of the most innovative work of cutting-edge designers (curated by ten proven design stars) that is itself a stunningly designed object.' (Met Home) 'A book that covers the spectrum of design for everyday life, from bath accessories and kitchen utensils to furniture, lighting, and cars.' (Metropolis) 'Design obsessives who'd quite rightly rather spend their cash on a chair than a metal-covered reference book should note that Spoon, the 'exhibition in a book', is now available in a much more wallet-friendly paperback version. ... looks pretty good on the coffee table, too.' (Time Out)
