The Cognitive radio is a "smart radio" which can sense the channel that contains the channel from large class of heterogeneous device, networks and services. On the basis of sensing, the radio will implement algorithm to share the limited bandwidth channels with other users to in order to achieve an efficient wireless communication. The basic idea is to make spectrum access more flexible by allowing the unlicensed users to access the radio spectrum under certain conditions and restrictions. Because the traditional wireless systems were designed to operate on a dedicated frequency band, they are not able to utilize the improved flexibility. Therefore, the concept of cognitive radio emerged, the main goal of which is to provide adaptability to wireless transmission through dynamic spectrum access (DSA) so that the utilization of the frequency spectrum can be enhanced without losing the benefits associated with static spectrum allocation. Optimization technique is highly required to address the issue of trade-off between sensing time and throughput. This book proposed an application of Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio.
