Based upon surveys of county political party committee activists, conducted for the Southern Grassroots Party Activists Project and funded by the National Science Foundation, the work examines each of the 11 Southern states. CHARLES D. HADLEY is Research Professor of Political Science at the University of New Orleans. He is coeditor (with T. Baker, L. Moreland, and R. Steed) of Political Parties in the Southern States: Party Activists in Partisan Coalitions (Praeger, 1990). LEWIS BOWMAN is retired from the faculty of the department of Political Science at the University of South Florida.
