Snip darts away as Granddad Mac yells, "Go get 'em, Snip!" As a part-collie canine, Snip herds cattle from natural instinct. The Jersey milk cows may protest, but they know Snip means business when he barks and races toward them. It's milking time. Flossie, Bossie, Posie, and Rosie trot to the barn. Granddad Mac is ready with milk pail in hand. Soon the barn cats will appear when they hear the plinking sound of warm milk hitting the bottom of a metal pail. Snip takes a nap near his friend Harvey, the horse who wears a hat. When granddad finishes the milking and the cows have filled themselves with grain and cool water, Snip herds them back to the green pasture. Back at the house, Snip races beside Susan on her bicycle, or eats some of Grandma Mac's delicious meat, or takes a nap in his red house. Surrounded by happiness, Snip's life sounds perfect. But, Susan hears whimpering sounds coming from Ship's house during the night. Susan has a thought and talks with Granddad Mac. "Maybe he is lonesome," granddad answers thoughtfully.
