Smart Internet is a step towards enhancing the static and inflexible structures of current networks. As part of the general research trend, this book focuses on the design and development of technologies that allow rapid deployment of new functionality throughout the network, which allows network service providers to respond quickly to the changing requirements and keep up with the fast evolution in communication technologies. This book begins with an introduction into the Smart Internet System and a description of the basic mechanisms behind Smart Internet. Examination of existing active systems and associated technologies is provided. The core of the book presents the description of the architecture and the design requirements of a novel active router that enables flexible network programmability based on so-called "user components". This active router is designed to provide maximum flexibility for the development of future network functionality and services. Its service composition method enables flexible programmability through the transparent integration of user components into the router's data path.
