Homeschooling parents and students! Visit joanrawlinshusby.wordpress.com for free downloadable activities to go with Shipwreck on the Lights. Billy Skarson and his cousins Mike and Jodi travel by mission boat to visit Jodi's pen pal, April Bairns, at her peaceful light station home on Guardian Island, British Columbia. Adventures start before they even board the Good Hope, with Billy's comical introduction to the villainous Chuck Thurler. The crew members quickly become friends as the teens learn about the Good Hope's mission to serve isolated people along the British Columbia coastline. At first, Billy's main worry is surviving strict Miss Skairdale's 9th grade math class next fall. April agrees to help him review 8th grade math if he'll take bird photos for her final school project of the year. Then drug dealer Chuck Thurler turns up with a construction crew sent to work on the light station. The teens have no idea they'll soon be embroiled in a murderous plot that includes sinking the light station boat (with Mike aboard). That's followed by an exciting helicopter flight to find and save the Good Hope from destruction. Throughout the worry and danger, Billy and April both learn more about trusting God for help in all of life. The Adventure Quest stories are set in the 1980s, before today's technology became part of everyday life. One reason for republishing them now is to remind young people of the satisfaction of depending on their own imaginations and ingenuity. As readers adventure along with Billy and Jodi, they will experience the special world that is the Pacific Northwest, with all its beauty and variety. As the young people grow in their faith, readers will also learn how to apply God's word to their own lives.
