Artificial sensors have now assumed a major role in both domestic and industrial settings and the development of new technologies continues at an ever accelerating rate. There have, however, been no publications which approach the subject of sensors from a materials standpoint and with this in mind the goal of the authors has been to present a global overview of the field in a single, compact and accessible volume. Introductory chapters give a solid introduction to the classification of sensors and the various properties of materials used in sensing. Each subsequent chapter deals with specific areas of sensor materials, these being metal, semiconductor, dielectric, solid electrolytic, magnetic, fibre optic, radiant and biological. In addition, there is substantial bibliographic information which provides a source of published research literature for each sensor. Sensor Materials will thus appeal to anyone working with sensors who wishes to familiarize themselves with the major classes of modern sensing materials. This will include materials scientists and materials chemists, and the book will prove useful to researchers new to the field or already working in it.
