MICHAEL DENNIS BROWNE was born in England in 1940 and came to the United States in 1965. A graduate of the creative writing program at Iowa, he has taught at Iowa, Columbia, Bennington, and, since 1971, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he is a professor of English and former director of the creative writing program. As a librettist, he has written many texts for music, working principally with Stephen Paulus and John Foley, S.J.; the works include song cycles, operas, cantatas, carols, hymns, and songs for children. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Bush Foundation, and the Jerome Foundation. His awards include Discover '68, the Borestone Prize, a Loft-McKnight Award, and a 1993 Minnesota Book Award for You Won't Remember This.
