The present volume has been prepared in conjunction with an exhibition project initiated by the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the Städtische Galerie im Karmeliterkloster, Frankfurt am Main. Its ambitious aim is to show the whole Hrdlicka. In contrast to the preceding catalogues and books, it was our intention to put together a total picture in which the interrelationships among the different media over a period of fifty years - from 1945 to 1997 - the thematic links between his sculpture, his drawings and his graphic work occupied the center of our attention. A particularly valuable aspects of this publication is the reproduction, and thus the preservation, of a large number of drawings. This medium has taken on increasing importance for Hrdlicka during the course of the past thirty jears.
