In 1998, the adventure of looking for possible uses for the biggest waste of the wood industry, sawdust, began. Being a new idea at that time, the advisors of this project considered that the use of sawdust as a substrate for nursery plant production was very uncertain and advised me to look for a specialist in ruminant feeding, since it had greater possibilities of being used for this purpose. However, following my intuition, the decision was made to try these two possible uses, as feed for ruminants and as substrate for forest plant production in nurseries. The surprises began when testing increasing amounts of sawdust in the substrate mixtures, in all of them, the plant growing in sawdust developed adequately, and it was also found that in the mixtures with amounts close to 100% sawdust, the highest quality plants were produced.
