The purpose of this book is to define and demonstrate how a multidisciplinary team can be organized, integrated, and utilized in the care of sarcoma patients. Real world experiences related by multiple sarcoma specialists working as members of a multidisciplinary team along with specific case examples highlighting sarcomas of bone and soft tissue in children and adults are presented in a framework geared toward practicing oncologists and surgeons in order to foster the creation and development of care teams for sarcoma patients. It is explained how a truly multidisciplinary approach, with "one stop shopping," offers better standardization and delivery of care, streamlines patient education, facilitates discussions and decision making, and provides comprehensive support throughout the treatment process. All aspects of treatment are covered, from first-line treatments for different tumor types through to salvage therapy and the development of novel investigational agents. Autorenporträt
Robert M. Henshaw is a Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery (Orthopedic Oncology) at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Director of Orthopedic Oncology at Medstar Georgetown Orthopedic Institute. He serves as Vice Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Director of Orthopedic Oncology at Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC, and consultant to the Surgical Branch of the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health. Dr. Henshaw received his degree in mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the UCLA Medical Center followed by fellowship training in Orthopedic Oncology at Washington Hospital Center. Board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Henshaw specializes in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal tumors in children and adults. As director of the musculoskeletal tumor fellowship program at Medstar, Dr. Henshaw is very active in research, education and training of doctors in his specialty. A primary investigator for multiple clinical trials, he has over 160 presentations, publications and book chapters in the field of orthopedic oncology. His primary focus is on limb sparing surgery and the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with sarcomas.
