The cities of Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal de La Laguna and urban are physically linked, so that together have a population of over 382,331 inhabitants. Almost half (45.9%) of the inhabitants of the island and about 1/5 (18.35%) of all inhabitants of the Canary Islands living in these two cities. What makes them the largest urban area in the Canary Islands (independent of municipal lines) of the European Union outside Europe. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also the capital of the island of Tenerife (most populated of archipelago and Spain) and capital of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
