Since its original publication in 1794, Hayes' book has become a rare and valuable collector's item. Now, for the first time in two hundred years, his Practical Treatise has been re-published. Not only a practical guide, it is also a celebration of the trees of the Irish countryside and its great demesnes.

Autorenporträt
Thomas Pakenham is the author of The Year of Liberty (1969), The Boer War (1979) and The Scramble for Africa (1991). He has written two bestselling books on trees, Meetings with Remarkable Trees (1996) and Remarkable Trees of the World (2002). He is married to Valerie Pakenham, author of The Big House in Ireland (2000), and they live on the family estate in Tullynally, County Westmeath, Ireland, where he plants trees with enthusiasm. In 1990 he became founder and chairman of the Irish Tree Society, which follows Samuel Hayes' lead in encouraging people to plant and preserve fine trees for posterity.
