Partly in response to the attack on it when it appeared in 1895, Garland revised the novel in 1899, and this revision was used as the text of all later republications of Rose. Professor emeritus of English at Tulane University, Donald Pizer is the author of Documents of American Realism and Naturalism and of critical studies of Garland and Frank Norris, and is the editor of Hamlin Garland's Diaries.
