The medulla oblongata is responsible for the autonomous nervous system as control of ventilation, cardiovascular and vasomotor centers, controlling baroreceptors, reflex centers of vomiting, coughing, sneezing, including the pharyngeal reflex, the swallowing reflex, and the masseter reflex or bulbar reflexes. The pons contains nuclei that relay signals from the forebrain to the cerebellum, with nuclei that deal with sleep, respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensation, and posture, helping brain in mind construction.
