Farris was born in 1880 in a rural county of north-east Kentucky. Raised a younger son of a long-settled farming family, he eventually turned to the profession of teaching. He sat down while in his 70s to write his "Reminiscences and Experiences". Written in the 1950s when in his mid-70s, Farris provides vignettes of his life growing up on a rural farm in the 1880s and 1890s. He spends the latter half of his writing discussing his thoughts looking back on a 30-year career in teaching. This 2nd edition includes about 70 additional pages which were thought lost at the time of the compilation of the 1st edition.
