Oral cancer is a highly complex disease ranking among the top 10 cancers worldwide. It has become one of the reasons for morbidity and mortality among public health problems due to its poor prognosis, high recurrence rate and insufficient screening modalities. A variety of risk factors are implicated in the development of oral cancer of which the most common are tobacco smoking and betel quid chewing. At the molecular level, the process of carcinogenesis is modulated by both environmental and genetic factors. Therefore, it becomes important to increase the clinician knowledge about early detection techniques, associated risk factors, and preventive measures against the disease, which will help improve the disease outcome. The traditional methods though considered as golden tools yet are not useful in early stages of tumors as they are more time-consuming, painful and laborious procedures. With the advent of nanotechnology, cancer could become a manageable condition. So, in conclusion early detection of the disease can help in improving the outcome of disease.
