Kuhn draws on interviews with Ramsay and others involved in the film's production, and combines this with a close reading of selected passages to provide an in-depth and illuminating analysis of the film's poetic style and its aesthetics, including an examination of its construction of a child's world through a highly distinctive organisation of cinematic space.

Annette Kuhn is Professor of Film Studies, Queen Mary, University of London, UK. Her publications include An Everyday Magic (2002), Women's Pictures (1994) and The Power of the Image (1988). ANNETTE KUHN teaches film and television studies at the University of Glasgow, and has written widely on cultural theory, feminism and cinema, and film history. Her publications include The Power of the Image: Essays on Representation and Sexuality, Cinema, Censorship and Sexuality, 1909 to 1925, and, as editor, The Women's Companion to International Film.
