André Norton (1912-2005) was an American author who wrote primarily in the genres of science fiction and fantasy. Born Alice Mary Norton, she adopted her pen name early in her career as a way to stand out in a male-dominated field. Norton published her first novel, "The Prince Commands," in 1934, and went on to write more than 200 books over the course of her long career. Her best-known works include the Witch World series, the Time Traders series, and the Solar Queen series. Norton's writing was known for its strong female characters and exploration of themes such as identity, prejudice, and the struggle for freedom. She was also noted for her skill in world-building and creating vivid, immersive settings for her stories. In addition to her writing, Norton was a passionate advocate for literacy and education, and donated generously to libraries and other organizations that supported these causes. Throughout her career, Norton received numerous awards and honors, including the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1983, and induction into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1997. She passed away in 2005 at the age of 93.
