Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects a wide range of people throughout the world. In classical Unani literature, the efficacy of both the drugs i.e. Aristolochia rotunda and Iris ensata were already reported for neurological disorders including epilepsy, but no work has done on their antiepileptic activity. The objectives of the study were standardization and biological evaluation of the roots of Aristolochia rotunda and Iris ensata. The roots of both drugs, i.e. Zaravand mudahraj (Aristolochia rotunda) & Irsa (Iris ensata) possess anticonvulsant and antioxidant activities, this might be due to the presence of phenolic and flavonoid constituents. In conclusion, Aristolochia rotunda exhibited better anticonvulsant and antioxidant activities. This type of research is highly needed for those who are interested in research in herbal medicine and would be helpful to society.
