The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the international judicial institution that is largely responsible for prosecuting individuals who have committed humanitarian crimes in the 21st century; especially in state parties. The investigative and prosecutorial operations of the International Criminal Court in Africa since its establishment has elicited contentious reactions that have portrayed the Court as an institution that seeks to try only Africans for crimes that are not unique to the continent. This claim is evident in the trial of state heads who have in recent times been tried for various offences by the Court. Two of the most controversial; that of Omar al Bashir and Laurent Gbagbo were examined in this book. This book submitted that the norm of individual criminal responsibility in international criminal justice that the ICC embodies is not consistent with common traditional norms of accountability in the continent which is entrenched in the philosophy guiding the governments of African states. This fact explains the lack of commitment to its promotion.
