Spheroidal Graphite cast iron (S.G. Iron) casks are used in nuclear industries for transporting the nuclear fuels/related materials used in nuclear reactors for past tradition examination. This is of great importance and requirement for nuclear establishments in the world. The use of S.G. Iron casks for storage and transport of radio-active material is now being practiced in different countries. In the year 2005 the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) approved S.G. Iron casks for spent fuel transportation and includes them in its structural standards. Initially ASME was reluctant to approve S.G. Iron casks for such purpose on the supposition that such material would become weak at low temperatures. But the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) was ultimately able to convince the ASME by presenting voluminous material and test data's including those on drop tests using actual size S.G. Iron casks even at -400C. The official approval was obtained after four years of deliberations. Spheroidal Graphite cast iron casks are now being manufactured for nuclear purpose in Germany, U.S.A. and Japan.
