Vinay Lal is Associate Professor of history at UCLA since 1993, and Director of the University of California Education Abroad Program (India), 2007?9. His previous books include Empire of Knowledge: Culture and Plurality in the Global Economy (Pluto Press, 2002); The History of History: Politics and Scholarship in Modern India (OUP, 2003); Of Cricket, Guinness and Gandhi: Essays on Indian History and Culture (Penguin, 2005); Introducing Hinduism (Icon Books, 2005); and The Other Indians: A Political and Cultural History of South Asians in America (HarperCollins, 2008). He has also co-edited (with Ashis Nandy) Fingerprinting Popular Culture: The Mythic and the Iconic in Indian Cinema (OUP, 2006).
