One of the measures to achieve sustainability in urban transportation is to encourage bus transit by assigning priority to it through provision of exclusive bus lanes. The subject matter of this book is about formulating an appropriate methodology to study and quantify the possible impact of provision of exclusive bus lane under heterogeneous traffic conditions. The impact of introduction of exclusive bus lane is measured in terms of increase in speed of bus due to provision of exclusive lane and change (reduction) in speed of other categories of motor vehicles, due to the consequent reduction in road space, for a wide range of traffic volume, using micro simulation technique. An attempt has also been made for justifying provision of exclusive bus lane by apportioning of road space based on the number of persons (travellers) making use of the available road space. This study is also concerned with estimation of the probable shift of the personal vehicle users to bus due to increase in its level of service. It is hoped this book will be a useful reference to graduate students, researchers, and practitioners interested in planning of bus priority measures.
