Alec was born six days after the present Queen and never forgot to remind his mother that his birthday was six days after hers. He grew up in Enfield, North London in a middle-class family with a nominal attachment to the Church of England. In 1947 he became a Roman Catholic to the bewilderment of his relatives and in 1954 was ordained a priest. Now in his old age he finds himself to his great surprise, writing poetry. He published his first collection, The Flickering Leaf, in 2017.
