Pivotal Trials in Ophthalmology: A Guide for Trainees is an introductory text designed to give trainees a comprehensive and accessible overview of landmark trials in the different subspecialties of ophthalmology, and may also serve as a useful reference for practicing ophthalmologists, optometrists and researchers in the field.

The text is subdivided by subspecialty, with each chapter authored by both a trainee and an expert in the field. A selection of pivotal research studies that have shaped how practitioners diagnose, manage, and treat disease are reviewed in chronological order. The purpose, study design, results, and study limitations are reviewed, and the key takeaway points from each study are listed in a digestible, bullet-point format. By listing the studies in chronological order, the reader will have an understanding of how studies have built upon each other and how knowledge has evolved over time.

¿Jenny C. Dohlman, MD Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Boston, MA, USA Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA Dr. Dohlman is a current PGY4 ophthalmology resident at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School. She received a B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Science from MIT and conducted two years of research in the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery at Harvard Medical School/Koch Institute for Integrated Cancer Research at MIT prior to receiving an M.D. from the Yale University School of Medicine. She completed her intern year at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School prior to her general ophthalmology training at MEEI where she is currently engaged in a mix of clinical, surgical, didactic and research activities. Alice C. Lorch, MD Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Boston, MA, USA Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA Dr. Lorch is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in the care of a wide range of eye disorders. She graduated with a BS in Biology from Yale University and subsequently earned her MD at Harvard Medical School and MPH in Clinical Effectiveness from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. A graduate of the Harvard Ophthalmology Residency Program, Dr. Lorch served as Chief Resident and Director of the Trauma Service and then joined the Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Consultation Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. She is the Program Director of the Harvard Ophthalmology Residency Program and the Associate Chief for Quality in Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Her research interests are centered around quality, outcomes and education.
