To protect neurons against damage caused by stroke or neurodegenerative diseases like M. Alzheimer and M. Parkinson is an urgent task for therapy. Basic research in this field is moving rapidly and should lead to the breakthrough in clinical therapy in the near future. A lot of new insights into the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroprotection were obtained by using methods of molecular biology and gene technology.
