This situation might have changed with the advent of new, less invasive approaches to the management of urinary calculi. Nevertheless, urinary stones an important place in everyday urological practice. Therefore, it remains essential to evaluate the current knowledge with respect to stone disease and to derive from these insights, guidelines and recommendations for the diagnosis, and medical and interventional treatment of urinary tract calculi, as well as for the prevention of disease recurrence. Urinary obstruction is a common cause of acute and chronic renal failure. 'Obstructive uropathy' refers to the structural impedance to the flow of urine anywhere along the urinary tract leading to 'hydronephrosis', which is the dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces.
