The present study was conducted to evaluate pharmacological and toxicological properties of the P. reticulatus plant extract. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic and toxicological properties including acute oral and repeated dose 28 day oral toxicity of methanol extract was evaluated in Wistar albino rats. The physical nature of the methanol extract of P. reticulatus leaves (MEPRL) revealed the acidic pH, semi-solid and sticky consistency after extracting with the solvent methanol. The preliminary phytochemical analysis of MEPRL revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents like carbohydrates, starch, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, saponins, phytosterols and triterpenoids In vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of MEPRL leaves was conducted at doses of 500, 100 and 200 mg/kg. The extract at the dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg showed significant (p<0.05) anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan induced paw oedema and the same doses showed significant (p<0.05) analgesic activity against acetic acid induced writhings in Wistar rats. Acute oral toxicity study and repeated dose 28 day oral toxicity study was conducted in Wistar rats.
