The Women's Project of New Jersey, Inc. was formed in 1984 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the retrieval and publication of New Jersey women's history. Formed around a nucleus Board of Trustees, it includes more than 250 women and men who have contributed their research and writing to the cause. This volume was prepared under the direction of an editorial board chaired by Joan N. Burstyn of Syracuse University, formerly of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
