"Harvest" describes a pepper's unlikely winter bloom as "a small fruit, gnarled // as a toothless gnome." The poem abruptly shifts: "We won't eat it. / It's not food we're after, // just this off-kilter, out-of- / proportion pleasure of seeing / kinked, bare bones give birth." Merrill Oliver Douglas lives near Binghamton, N.Y., where she runs a freelance writing business. She holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.A. in English from Binghamton University. Her poems have appeared in Baltimore Review, Barrow Street, Crab Creek Review, South 85 Journal, Tar River Poetry, Stone Canoe, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Paterson Literary Review, the Comstock Review, Sugar House Review and other journals.
