Nach Paris!

Bücher über Paris gibt es viele, weshalb es die hervorstechenden zu finden gilt. Graham Robbs "Adventure History of Paris" muss man unbedingt zu ihnen zählen. Vor vier Jahren schon hatte der englische Gelehrte, der damals bereits auf hoch gelobte Biographien von Victor Hugo, Balzac und Rimbaud zurückblicken konnte, ein wunderbares Buch über das Frankreich abseits der Hauptstadt geschrieben: die Geschichte der inneren Kolonialisierung eines der Pariser Zentralmacht nur vage bekannten Landes, beginnend mit der Revolution bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg. Mit seinem neuen Buch aber ist Graham Robb zum Ausgangspunkt seiner frankophilen Passion zurückgekehrt. Denn am Beginn stand Paris, das er zum ersten Mal als Schüler durchstreifte, einen gebraucht erstandenen Baudelaire in der Tasche, dessen Lektüre noch dem gar nicht für Schüler gedachten Teil der Rue Saint-Denis dunklen Glanz verlieh. Die Leidenschaft war geweckt, und über drei Jahrzehnte später lässt Robb nun auf eindrucksvolle Weise sehen, was er ihr an Erfahrungen, Lektüren und Nachforschungen abgewonnen hat. Er tut es in der ungewöhnlichen Form von erzählten Geschichten, die vielstimmig von der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis nahe an die Gegenwart - die Unruhen in den Banlieus 2005 - führen. Die narrative Ausgestaltung mag dabei vielleicht nicht immer ganz überzeugen, doch faszinierend ist, welche Fülle des Wissens über Paris und seine Bewohner in sie eingegangen ist. Dass man diese Stadt nie wirklich kennt, ist natürlich eine banale Feststellung. Aber man kann sie doch auch zu einer Einsicht wenden. Hier hat man den Autor dazu. (Graham Robb: "Parisians".
