"You'll never look at Lake Champlain the same way again!" --Bill McKibben, author, environmentalist, activist, Co-founder and Senior Advisor of 350.org, an international climate campaign organization Dive deep into Our Scrumptious Lake, a humorous fiction, science-themed graphic novel, tailored for middle grade students but suitable for water lovers of all ages. An enlightening and PHYTOTASTIC story filled with science facts reveals the complexities and interdependence of the fascinating and fragile aquatic food chain. Phytoplankton, a microscopic organism, oblivious to his crucial role in the lake's food chain is befriended by a diverse lake community, particularly Vermaid, the lake scientist of Abenaki heritage. A critical turning point occurs when stormwater runoff stirs up more than green pea soup. Will the underwater ecosystem survive the resulting cyanobacteria bloom? This savory story serves up more than Rock Snot Creemees. It dishes up hope, stirs empathy and beckons lake stewardship. Hungry for more? Grab a fork and dig in! Don't forget to leave room for dessert! Devour the comprehensive appendix filled with activities and resources, even Science and Language Art Standards applications, all sure to further learning and ensure that Our Scrumptious Lake is swimmable, fishable and drinkable.
