Osteomalacia is the softening of the bones due to defective bone mineralization secondary to inadequate amounts of available phosphorus and calcium, or due to overactive resorption of calcium from the bone due to hyperparathyroidism (which causes hypercalcemia, in contrast to other etiologies).
