European Private Law is in the making through many scholarly and official projects. None of such projects has been as thorough and patient in trying to develop a general knowledge on how things are today in the landscape of European Private Law as the "Common Core of European Private Law Project", launched in 1993. Within the Common Core Project, over 200 professionals apply a painstaking comparative analysis of European legal systems. This book is a collection of the views of the importance and stakes of the making of European Private Law as presented in the papers delivered at the plenary sessions of 2001 to 2005 General Meetings of the Project. It is worth stressing, however, that since 2004 our Project and our books have been attempting to use the peculiar techniques of the factual approach as the main tool for the understanding of the private law and the legal foundations of the new EU members. It is in this perspective that the opening plenary session of the 2004 Meeting was mainly devoted to what we have called the "Ten New Treasury Boxes - The European Enlargement and the Common Core Project". Leading scholars from the new EU countries have enlightened the impact of the integration of EU law in their legal systems as well as the challenges the 'Common Core' method of legal analysis opens in their respective national legal cultures. The resulting essays are included in this book as a crucial part of it.
