The present volume is a collection of 29 essays by internationally reknowned authors on the history of the English language and English historical linguistics. It was compiled in honour of Manfred Görlach on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The articles are concerned with a multiplicity of topics, ranging from historical phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics to more applied issues of historical lexicography, sociolinguistics, text types, language contact and varieties of English, language and literature, and medieval manuscript studies. They thus display the great range of current research activity within the field of English historical linguistics and reflect the wide range of interests covered by Manfred Görlach's own work, demonstrating the relevance of his achievements to the state of the study of English historical linguistics today.
