Cyrus Thomas was on in Kingsport, Tennessee and formerly worked as a teacher before signifying himself as a government entomologist. Thomas's affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology was a major factor in his influential role in the discipline of anthropology. He carried out ground-breaking research on prehistoric mound builder civilizations, concentrating on the Ohio and Mississippi valleys.
