This is a story of a man married at 21 and getting into all sorts of trouble on the streets where he lived as a young man. A young man who could not accept the responsibility of a young wife, two daughters, and a mortgage. A man who acted as though he was still single. During those difficult early years his wife, Sue, stuck by him despite his hours in the pubs and night clubs. All this changed when they decided in the seventies to emigrate to Australia for a new life and a fresh start. John always had a love for dogs and was obsessed with the magnificent Irish wolfhound. His other passion was boxing; a sport he had been connected with since the age of eight. This book tells the story of a man whose life and that of his family changed dramatically. After owning and showing Irish wolfhounds on the Adelaide show circuit, John spent years of study and exams to become a licensed international dog judge. He also set up a boxing gym and represented Australia in Thailand. During these years, John-or Johny, as he had become known in the boxing world-appeared in a number of TV adverts along with extra parts in movies and mini-series including live commentary for Foxtel boxing and local TV. In addition to that John made trips all over the world judging the wolfhounds. John and Sue, now retired, live on a beautiful twelve-acre property in the Adelaide foothills with their wolfhounds and run a small boarding cattery. John is still judging and taking small acting roles. As John puts it, "Life has been good to us."
Autorenporträt
My love and fascination for Irish wolfhounds began when I was 6 years old. We bought our first Irish wolfhound in 1975. We have bred many champions over the years including grand and supreme champions, also, the 2016 All Breeds Top Dog Australia Supreme Champion, Greycroft, was In Like Flynn (2018) by the name Errol. I am a licensed all breeds judge and have judged Irish wolfhounds in many countries, including specialties in the USA (Including Northern California, Rocky Mountain, New England), Australia, New Zealand and Canada (including the Canadian National in Ottawa) and currently I am under contract to judge the Puget Sound Specialty this year. My judging experience has taken me all over the world in the Philippines, Borneo, Ireland, England, Wales and Thailand. I have also judged Irish wolfhounds at all breed championship shows in many other parts of the world, one of which was the American National in Philadelphia where I was honoured to judge the terrier group that was broadcast on TV throughout America after the Macey Day Parade. I have also judged championship shows in Leeds and Darlington UK. I am a founder member of The Irish Wolfhound Club of South Australia Inc and have been its secretary for 24 years. I have given many lectures to trainee judges in south Australia and other states of Australia on judging Irish wolfhounds covering all aspects of breed type and soundness. I enjoy giving back some of the knowledge that I have gained from over 30 years of judging. In 2015 I wrote this book called My Incredible Journey with Irish Wolfhounds which sold out very quickly and is now being published by Austin McAuley in London and should be available in 2020. I have appeared in about eight movies and a mini-series, plus a number of TV adverts on Australian Television and represented Australia in Bangkok at the Kings Cup (Boxing ) live commentary for Foxtel and local TV stations also live stage shows comedy in pub and clubs in Adelaide, Jan 2020.
