at the heart of living systems and chemical processes, non-equilibrium thermodynamics provides a constructive way of formulating evolution equations of processes. This monograph discusses different kinds of such theories and their consistent and rigorous unification in terms of multilevel formulations. A wide range of examples with an emphasis on the theory of mixtures helps in applying the theory e.g. in physics, chemistry, and biology.
One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples.

Rezensionen
"The book presents an advanced course on thermodynamics. Each chapter is provided with applied examples for illustration; however, its presentation is not straight forward. The book may find places in university libraries as well as in research establishments."
