The theme of this research is 'Motivation for Reading in Secondary Education - The Case of Escola Secundária Geral das Palmeiras and Escola Secundária Geral das Mangas', with the general objective of 'Reflecting on motivation for reading in secondary school students'. The study centred on questions about motivation for reading in 9th grade students at Escola Secundária Geral das Palmeiras (urban area) and Escola Secundária Geral das Mangas (rural area).The theoretical references are related to motivation and reading in the teaching and learning process, where studies carried out by researchers such as: SANTOS (1981), LEITE (2005), SANTOS (2006) and CRISTO (2008) were the main basis for the research. The results of the research lead us to conclude that in order to develop motivation for reading in secondary school pupils, most of whom are teenagers and young people, both in the school environment and outside of school, it is important for everyone to be involved, not leaving this complex task to the sole responsibility of the teacher.
