This book presents the basic principles of group theory and their applications in chemical bonding. First it discusses the symmetry elements and symmetry operations, matrix and matrix representations of different symmetry operations, symmetry groups and classification, molecular point groups, reducible and irreducible representations, construction of character table of different point groups, projection operators and its uses in construction of SALCs for sigma- and pi-molecular orbitals of difference molecules and ions. Produktbeschreibung
The book then describes the concept of hybridization in sigma- and pi-bonding molecules of different point groups to explain their shapes. The book also present in detail the molecular orbital theory and methods for construction of molecular orbitals of molecules with different geometries. In addition, it highlights the detained bonding in organometallic sandwich compounds, such as, ferrocene and bis( -benzene)chromium in eclipsed and staggered conformations. Finally, the book describes the group theoretical approach of crystal field theory for bonding in metal complexes of different geometries. The book is designed for the postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. students.
