Cognitive impairment whose maximum expression is dementia. They constitute syndromes that affect functional independence due to intellectual, cognitive (mainly gradual onset), motor and emotional deterioration. Among the most frequent causes associated with pathophysiological processes related to aging in older adults are: Alzheimer's disease (AD), mixed AD, cerebrovascular disease, diabetic encephalopathy, metabolic syndrome. And less frequently: pathology with Lewy bodies (in Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's disease dementia, frontotemporal degeneration (frontotemporal dementias), and hippocampal sclerosis That have been encompassed under the term, neurodegenerative disorders of aging that, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, have as a common denominator an underlying pathophysiological process of metabolic alterations and low-grade inflammation. These pathologies are linked to detrimental changes in eating habits and a decrease in physical activity.
