These were the last days of a healthcare era when physicians, insurance companies and hospitals amassed huge fortunes working in a fee-for-service money environment, largely free of any quality-of-care requirements. Medical Necessity tells a story of what happens when institutions and the people in charge are not held accountable.

John Willis Mitchell is a retired hospital administrator who has served from sailor to CEO. In 2009, he, along with his senior executive team, was named "Top Leadership Team in Healthcare for Mid-Sized Hospitals" by HealthLeaders Media. Mitchell holds a BS in mass communication from James Madison University and a MS in communication management from Virginia Commonwealth University. Early in his career he worked briefly as a television news reporter. He lives and writes on the Western Slope of Colorado where, on most days, his wife Paula loves him more than her horse. Together, they love and enjoy three grown adult children and two granddaughters.
