There are various technical challenges to making the hydrogen economy into a reality. This book provides an understanding of these challenges. Covering seven of the hydrogen production methods, it describes the materials used in the production, distribution, storage, and utilization of hydrogen for transportation and energy production.
Covering all seven of the current hydrogen production methods, this volume describes the technical challenges and the current efforts in developing materials possessing the properties required for handling each stage of the hydrogen fuel chain. Topics discussed include chemical reactions, commercial equipment, and other aspects of separating, sealing, and purifying hydrogen; hydrogen's effects on pipeline steels and other storage and transportation vessels; and hydrogen permeation barriers and hydrides for on-board hydrogen storage. Distribution, storage, and utilization technologies are examined, and the final chapters focus on electrolytes and component materials for solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and H2/O2 PEM fuel cells.
