The second definition is a synthesis of the insights of the prominent Russian researcher S.G. Kara-Murza. In his view, manipulation is the oppression of the individual, whereby, as one wishes to believe what one wants to acquire (knowledge, experience, material goods, psychological comfort), the oppression can be achieved through 'lies that one wants to believe'.
