Women seek help men die. This conclusion was drawn from an international study of suicide prevention. They found that 75% of those who sought professional help were female. Conversely 75% of those who committed suicide in the same year were male. Research studies throughout the world have suggested that women suffer from depression at twice the rate of males. This book shows that male depression has been under-diagnosed and that traditional depression scales leave out symptoms such as irritability, anger, and aggression, that are often present in depressed males. The book offers a new depression scale, the DMDS, that more accurately assesses male depression and suicide risk. Three subscales were found: Factor 1: Emotional Acting-In, Factor 2: Emotional Acting-Out, Factor 3: Physical Acting-Out. Both depressed and non-depressed men scored significantly higher than depressed and non-depressed women on Factor 2 and Factor 3. There was a significant relationship between suicide riskand Factor 1. There was also a positive correlation between all three factors and the Gotland Male Depression Scale. These findings can help us reduce suicides and save men's lives.
