Jim Dawson is a West Virginia-born writer who has lived in Hollywood for 30 years. He is frequently cited for his excavation of Los Angeles's black musical history in such books as Nervous Man Nervous and What Was the First Rock 'n' Roll Record? Dawson has written liner notes for more than 100 albums, including an essay in Rhino Records' award-winning 1999 box set Central Avenue Sounds.
