Edward Bellamy (1850 - 1898) wurde als Sohn religiöser Eltern ins Priesteramt gedrängt, machte sich aber auch bald einen Namen als kritischer Journalist. Mit seinem utopischen Werk Looking Backward: 2000 - 1887 wurde er auf einen Schlag berühmt. Hunderte von Bellamy-Gesellschaften setzten sich alsbald für seine Ziele ein. Er zählt zu den Pionieren des utopisch-amerikanischen Romans und gilt als literarischer Hauptvertreter des US-amerikanischen Reformsozialismus.
