Desperate to escape life under the suffocating communist regime in Romania, Ilana managed to get a visa to visit the USA in 1983 for architectural research. Telling only her closest family, she didn't intend to return once in New York; she became a political refugee, eventually becoming a US citizen. Alone in New York and knowing very little English, Ilana struggled through years of poorly paid jobs. Slowly but surely working her way up the ladder until, as Project Architect for the Times Square Tower in New York, she led the team of architects and consultants who created the Construction Documents and supervised the skyscraper's construction. She currently lives in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, with her husband Jim, her three dogs and a pussycat.
