This woman's story begins in small-town U.S.A. in the 1950s and threads its way through life and death at the turn of the twenty-first century. It's partly a story about the deep passion of this couple's young love, interspersed with a lifetime of aviation and midget auto racing. The spark of romance that began while tap dancing as children blossomed into true love. With the birth of their first child in Okinawa during the raging Vietnam war, the adventure began in earnest. Somewhere between the story's beginning and end lies a meditation about the reality of small-town life and the things that actually matter in a life lived like Zorba The Greek. ¿ Enjoy a fun, breezy read with lots of nostalgia for those "of a certain age" as well as those who are curious about life in the 1950s and 1960s. ¿ Get a real peek into the world of racing, risk, and adventure. ¿ Written on the other side of grief, the book is a testament to "New Life" and one's ability to celebrate a shared life that has ended all too soon.
Autorenporträt
Luann E. Smith grew up in the '50s and '60s in the small, quaint town of Oregon, Wisconsin. She resides there today surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and lifelong friends. The only one missing is her childhood sweetheart and husband of 30 years. They left their hometown for a stint in the army and landed in Okinawa, where their first child was born during the Vietnam war. Returning home, Luann pursued a career as a commercial pilot and became the first female pilot for a Midwest commuter airline. Her family's lifelong involvement in Midget auto racing, aviation, and pioneering a progressive mobility device invented by her father has provided a journey culminating in this story: Life Before the Parking Meter Expired. While this book includes delightful vignettes of Luann's coming of age, it is also a heartwarming story of healing after a devastating loss.
